David Cass creates three-dimensional paintings, assemblages, installations and films. His multidisciplinary practice transforms items reclaimed from flea markets and antique fairs into contemporary contexts. In recent projects, Cass maps the shifting boundary between land and sea, turning coastal specimens and tide records into tangible encounters centred on sea-level rise and ice melt. From immersive displays to global letter-writing campaigns, his work translates scientific research into personal experience. Cass has exhibited internationally – solo presentations include the Scottish Gallery (Edinburgh) and the British Institute (Florence), while group exhibitions include Christie’s, the Royal Academy, MAXXI Museum and four COP climate summits – and holds a first-class degree from Edinburgh College of Art. Many of Cass’s projects are participatory, inviting audiences to engage directly with questions of environmental change, our relationship with water and how we coexist with the landscapes that sustain us.
